No LIVE In-Game Chat Tomorrow for Ohio State vs. Toledo

Posted by HD Handshoe

Unfortunately, I have a previous engagement tomorrow and will not be able to be online during the game, but if you are looking for a place to watch the game online for free, here are two places I know of that you can probably find the game.

See you back here next week 30 minutes before kickoff, for the LIVE in-game chat for the Illinois game!

GO BUCKS!

Interesting image from the USC game I thought I'd share. We got screwed royally, not that it can be undone now, but we did get the shaft!

This was USC's 1st TD, and this was on 4th & goal. Clearly the Buckeyes held, but the refs gave U$C the score anyway.

I wonder if Pete "dropped" his wallet on the field, near the linesman about this time...?

Tater Force for Heisman? You Have Got to be Effing Kidding Me?

Two games in, versus weak ass WMU and Notre Dame and this site really does exist.

This is sadly, not a joke. Click the image/link below:

Matchup Preview: Can Ohio State Avoid a Rocket-Sized Hangover?

By Chip Minnich—OSU Featured Columnist—BleacherReport.com

@

Location:

Cleveland Browns Stadium (Cleveland, OH). 12 p.m. EST, ESPN360.com

Toledo Head Coach:

Tim Beckman

Toledo Players Who Were Recruited By Ohio State:

N/A. There are not any players on Toledo's roster who were actively recruited by Ohio State. Freshman QB Terrance Owens is from Cleveland Glenville and visited Ohio State unofficially, but was never offered a scholarship.

Toledo Rushing Offense vs Ohio State Defense:

Toledo rushed for 305 yards last week against Colorado in a 54-38 win, and only 70 yards rushing in a 52-31 loss to Purdue. Ohio State was able to limit Navy's vaunted triple-option attack to 186 yards in its 31-27 victory in game one, and hold USC's talented rushing attack to 118 yards in its close 18-15 defeat last weekend.

Toledo averages out to almost 188 rushing yards per game, while Ohio State averages out to limiting opponents to 152 yards per game. I am going to give the edge to the Buckeyes here on this one.

Edge: Ohio State

Toledo Passing Offense vs Ohio State Defense:

Toledo's stellar offensive output so far this season can be traced to senior QB Aaron Opelt. So far this season, Opelt has been the MAC Player Of The Week both games and is completing 62% of his passes in Toledo's spread attack.

Ohio State was largely able to limit USC's Matt Barkley due to the intense crowd noise of Ohio Stadium as well as Barkley's inexperience. Aaron Opelt has had two good games against teams from BCS conferences.

Ohio State's pass defense is ranked 10th in the Big Ten, with 193.5 yards per game being allowed. Considering that Toledo's offense is averaging nearly 371 yards passing per game, I am going to give the slight edge to the Rockets on this one, despite Ohio State's talent on the defensive line. If Ohio State cannot pressure Aaron Opelt, this could turn out to be a shoot-out.

Slight Edge: Toledo

Ohio State Rushing Offense vs Toledo Defense:

Ohio State's rushing attack has only been able to generate 241 yards rushing this season. Toledo surrendered 315 yards to Purdue in week one, and 95 yards rushing to Colorado last week.

Translation: if Ohio State cannot run the ball on Toledo, it is going to be a long season in Columbus. I look for Ohio State to try to get QB Terrelle Pryor more involved in the rushing attack and for a heavy dose of RBs Daniel "Boom" Herron and Brandon Saine.

Edge: Ohio State

Ohio State Passing Offense vs Toledo Defense:

Ohio State has been struggling through the air as well so far this season. QB Terrelle Pryor is completing under 55 percent of his passes and looks generally indecisive in the pocket. While Pryor had some shining moments in last week's game against USC, it seems as though he is hesitant to run when opportunities present themselves.

Toledo's pass defense ranks 12th in the MAC at 288 yards per game being allowed. While I do not believe Ohio State will throw for nearly that many yards, I do look for Jim Tressel to try to develop Terrelle Pryor's confidence as a thrower before Big Ten play begins next weekend. Keep an eye on WR DeVier Posey; I have a feeling this may be Posey's break-out game.

Edge: Ohio State

Special Teams:

Toledo ranks 11th in the MAC on kickoff returns, last on punt returns, and last in punting. Ohio State has some dangerous returners in WR Ray Small, RB Brandon Saine, and WR Lamaar Thomas. Junior DB Grant Schwartz came oh-so-close with a punt block attempt last week against USC. Here is an area where Ohio State may be able to obtain some distinct field advantage against Toledo.

Edge: Ohio State

Intangibles:

Even though this is a "home" game for Toledo, look for a heavy Ohio State flavor to the crowd at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Toledo's Tim Beckman is a former Ohio State secondary coach under Jim Tressel, so I look for Beckman to try to capitalize on his familiarity with Tressel's coaching styles and strategies.

The biggest "X" factor in this game is how Ohio State can bounce back after such a tough loss to USC last weekend. If Ohio State is still moping about last week's defeat to USC, Toledo will make them pay for it dearly.

Toledo is not coming into Cleveland Browns Stadium thinking that they are going to lose to Ohio State. Toledo is brimming with confidence after the beating they gave to Colorado last week, and nothing would please so many of the players on the Toledo roster than to prove how much of a mistake Ohio State made by not recruiting them.

Edge: Toledo

Prediction:

This game hinges completely on Ohio State's ability to put the tough loss to USC behind them. Ohio State has not lost to an in-state rival school in 88 years.

I look for Ohio State to use the enthusiasm of the crowd in Cleveland Browns Stadium, as well as QB Terrelle Pryor's best performance of this young season, to carry them to victory.

This one will be close at the half, but I look for Ohio State to pull away by the end of the third quarter.

Ohio State 35, Toledo 17

USC Fallout: Is This Jim Tressel's Rich Rodriguez Moment?

By HD Handshoe
Founder—BlockONation

A year ago, after many fans of the University of Michigan were questioning whether or not RichRod was the right man to lead their program, as they suffered loss after loss on their way to a 3-9 season—the worst ever in UM history—Rodriguez was quoted as saying to those critics, "Get a life."

Fast forward to September 12, 2009.

Michigan is 2-0, "they call me" Tater (salad) Forcier is the next Tom Brady, Rich Rod is a coaching God, and UM fans are regaining their cocky attitudes.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are now 1-1, Pryor sucks and is overrated, Tressel is a bum, and OSU fans are PISSED after this most recent setback, an 18-15 loss to USC in Ohio Stadium to a team that lost eight defensive starters from a year ago, and came to Columbus with a true freshman QB at the helm.

This Buckeye team played great, specifically on defense, but in the end, it was the ridiculously conservative hand-cuffing of the offense that led to the final result...

Another loss, on the national stage by Ohio State, in a game that most Ohio State fans truly believe the Buckeyes should have won and would have won, if Jim Tressel was not ultra-conservative has critics coming out of the woodwork, more than ever, and has seemingly turned up the heat on Tressel.

Tressel is well aware that the hot seat is getting warmer, at least in the fans eyes.

Tressel said he has received critical e-mails, but said the fans' poison makes him feel sorry for them.

"When I read some of them I feel terrible for them because there's no way they're happy," he said. "They've got to be some of the most unhappy people in the world, and I feel bad because we just made them less happy, and I hate to be a part of making someone less happy. I mean, they're already miserable."

Did he really just say that? That critical OSU fans are some of the most unhappy and miserable people in the world?

To say that takes, and shows some balls.

Too bad Tressel has shown no sign of having a pair when it comes to his play-calling on the field.

Bob Hunter, a columnist for The Columbus Dispatch, wrote that angry Ohio State fans may want a new coach but no one talks about who that might be. He also brought up the subject of buying out Tressel's contract, which would pay Tressel more than $12 million through January 2013.

Tongue in cheek, Hunter proposed those wanting to get rid of Tressel might want to circulate petitions to build a casino or two on campus so the coach and his biggest boosters, athletic director Gene Smith and Ohio State president Gordon Gee, all could be fired.

With the Buckeyes preparing to play Toledo at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday, the glow of that 2002 national championship game seems light years away.

It's true, many fans are calling for his termination, which is extreme if you ask me, while others, at the very least are demanding that he relinquish his play-calling duties and hire a real offensive coordinator—possibly a young guru, with some fresh ideas on how to jump start the stagnant, dull, and sputtering offense we've seen for the past several seasons in Columbus—one who will put Tressel-ball out of it's misery for good.

I love the Buckeyes and Jim Tressel has been an amazing coach. I'm in what I believe to be the majority, that wants to keep Tressel, but would also like to see him give up play-calling.

The problem with keeping Tressel is, he doesn't want to do that. So, if he won't make some much needed changes with the coaching staff, and he won't give up calling the plays on offense, there's only one option left...

Maybe in just a few short years, Tressel really has went from a top five coach, to outdated and washed up.

I can't stress this enough: I still want Tressel as our coach, but I think he has to find and hire an offensive minded coordinator to give the play-calling duties to.

Nothing lasts forever and if he really is not willing to make these few changes, then I think it could be time for Tress to head back to Youngstown State, or just an early retirement from coaching altogether at the end of the season.

If he finds a way to lose to Toledo on Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium, he'll be less popular than Kanye West at the CMA's.

Maybe he can go on Leno and apologize too, and announce he's going to "take a break" from coaching—a permanent one.

TBDPITL: My Week Two Top 25 Ballot

by HD Handshoe
Founder—BlockONation

I am a voter in TBDPITL weekly poll.

Here is my official week two ballot.
My week one rank for each team in parentheses.

1--FLORIDA (1)

Everyone including me agrees the Gators are legit, and even though they still haven't played anyone, they've thrashed both cupcakes they've played, so they remain at the top.

2--USC (3)

After pulling off the comeback in Columbus, USC moves up one spot from No. 3 last week. If Tressel had some bucknuts, Ohio State and USC would be flip-flopped this week.

3--TEXAS (2)

Texas was No. 2 last week, but after struggling to pull away from mighty and unranked Wyoming until late, they drop to make room for USC. This week, the Longhorns host No. 19 Texas Tech, while USC plays unranked Washington. A solid win over the Red Raiders could easily vault Texas back up to the No. 2 slot, or depending on how the Florida/Tennesse game goes, the No. 1 position may be up or grabs.

4--CALIFORNIA (6)

Another week, another win, another step towards stealing the 2009 Heisman away from Tebow and McCoy for Jahvid Best. I'm on the Bear bandwagon.

5--PENN STATE (10)

Steady she goes. Much like Florida, Penn State has played nobody yet, but they won both games rather easily. I have them here just ahead of BYU, but barely.

6--BRIGHAM YOUNG (16)

BYU is not like most other mid-majors, aka BCS Busters. They were a powerhouse program years ago and they have won a national title. If they can run the table, this could be the year the BCS comes tumbling down and we may inch ever-so-closer to a playoff.

7--ALABAMA (7)

The Tide have a very talented running back crew in Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, and Roy Upchurch, but I'm still not sold on new QB Greg McElroy. Bama was only leading FIU 20-14 at home in Tuscaloosa late in the third. Even though they did pull away in the fourth for the 40-14, color me under-impressed with their overall performance in that game.

8--GEORGIA TECH (5)

I was really high on QB Josh Nesbitt and running back Jonathan Dwyer before this game, as evidenced by my No. 5 ranking of GT. After watching the game, I still think they are both pretty solid but the GT defense let them down, allowing 27 unanswered points. The Yellow Jackets kicked two late field goals and escaped at home with a 30-27 win over Clemson, but still drop three spots this week.

9--LOUISIANA STATE (9)

LSU could have moved up with a better home performance against Vandy, but the game was much closer than I expected, so the Tigers hold steady at No. 9 this week with the, albeit somewhat unimpressive, win.

10--OHIO STATE (8)

Tressel-ball does it again. If Tressel wasn't scared and conservative, the Buckeyes could have ran away with this game. Instead, they turned true freshman Matt Barkley into a SoCal folk-hero, and drop two spots in the poll. Had they won, as I believe they should have, Ohio State and USC would be flip-flopped this week.

11--BOISE STATE (14)

The Broncos pounded the Redhawks from Miami (OH) 48-0 and move up three spots this week. They go on the road to play Fresno State this week. The Bulldogs gave away the "W" last week, almost beating Wisconsin in Madison. This could be a great game that propels BSU into the top 10, or sends their BCS hopes down the drain.

12--OLE MISS (11)

Mississippi was jumped by Boise State and BYU after having a bye in week two. They only lose one poll position however because of the loss suffered by then-No. 5 Oklahoma State. Their next three games are all near locks, so by the time the October 10th game vs. No. 7 Alabama gets here, they could both be top 10 or maybe even top five.

13--OKLAHOMA (12)

The Sooners won big over Idaho State, 64-0, but it was Idaho State. They too lose one spot this week after Boise and BYU jump up and OK State slides after their loss to Houston. If Bradford can't come back soon, and be 100%, OU might not be here for long.

14--VIRGINIA TECH (13)

Tyrod Taylor played better, but it was the VT running game that led the Hokies to victory this past Saturday. Va Tech rolled over Marshall 52-10. David Wilson and Ryan Williams combined for 329 yards rushing and four touchdowns. But, it was lowly Marshall, and I'm not on the Taylor bandwagon like I was before the Alabama loss so they slip one spot this week. Next week they host No. 15 Nebraska so somebody's moving up and somebody's moving down.

15--NEBRASKA (18)

Could it be that Nebraska football is on it's way back? I'd say, so far so good under second-year coach Bo Pelini. I am pulling for them, but then I may be biased slightly, seeing as how Pelini was a defensive captain for the 1992 Ohio State Buckeyes. He has a young team, but he has some talent there. We'll know a lot more this week as the Huskers travel to Blacksburg to take on No. 14 Virginia Tech.

16--TCU (20)

After a week one bye, TCU jumps four spots from 20 to 16 after defensively manhandling the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville. The game was not close at all, so don't be fooled by the 30-14 final score. Virginia scored two garbage time touchdowns in the last 4:15 of the fourth quarter. Their next five games all are winnable, so they could easily be 6-0 and in the top ten possibly when they meet No. 6, BYU on October 24th, in Provo. That should be one heck of a matchup, regardless of the records.

17--CINCINNATI (24)

The Bearcats made a huge statement for the second week in a row, unleashing a 70-3 beatdown on SE Missouri State. In my preseason poll, Cincy wasn't even ranked, then after disposing of Rutgers on the road last week debuted at No. 24. Now, I know this week they played at home vs. a cupcake, but I am sold that Brian Kelly's team is going to score a lot of points no matter who they are playing and they are now my new favorites to win the Big East.

18--OREGON STATE (15)

It took a late FG for Oregon State to survive a scare from UNLV and pull out the 23-21 win. That was very disappointing and even though a win is a win, an ugly win, or a win when you really could have, and maybe should have lost, does count against you in my book. For that reason, the Beavers drop from 15 to 18 on my ballot this week.

19--TEXAS TECH (NR)

I did not have Texas Tech in my preseason, nor my week one poll. After last weeks 55-10 blowout over Rice, in which Taylor Potts passed for 456 yards and seven touchdowns, I may have, now admittedly, sold the Red Raiders a bit short. That being said, they may not stay here very long, or they may end up in the top 10 very soon. This week, they play at No. 3 Texas and the following week, they travel to Houston to take on a Cougar team that just upset then-No. 5, Oklahoma State. I have Houston as my No. 26 team, but they are ranked No. 21 in this weeks AP poll. The dust will settle in the next two weeks. Who'll be left standing?

20--KANSAS (22)

Kansas has played two cupcakes thus far, but so has UF and PSU, so I'm certainly not going to penalize the Jayhawks for it. Todd Reesing has over 460 yards and three touchdowns and tailback Jake Sharp has been solid, rushing for 227 yards and three scores. Their schedule remains soft until their October 24th game at Oklahoma. They could certainly arrive in Norman undefeated. Look for the stats and wins to continue to pile up until then.

21--OKLAHOMA STATE (4)

There is no team that has been a bigger disappointment so far this season than the Cowboys. Even with their three-pronged attack of QB Zac Robinson, WR Dez Bryant, and RB Kendall Hunter, OK State was anything but "OK" as they were upset 45-35 in Stillwater, by Case Keenum and the Houston Cougars of Conference-USA. I had them at No. 4 this past week and considered dropping them completely out of the top 25. Regardless of what they do next week, they still might exit the poll either way after the upcoming Houston-Texas Tech game, and a few other games involving almost top 25 teams on my radar.

22--MICHIGAN (NR)

OK, so this is not easy to say as a Buckeye fan, but I do try to be objective, sometimes. Tate Forcier has looked very very good in his first two games. I didn't take much away from the WMU game, but I fully expected Notre Dame to blast the Wolverines last week, and I was wrong. Michigan's defense still needs a lot of improvement, but DickRod has the offense looking good and Forcier looks legit as of right now. I previously had UM unranked, but they make the top 25 this week after a solid win over the then-No. 17 Fighting Irish.

23--UTAH (23)

The Utes moved into my top 25 last week after a handful of ugly performances and a few upsets. They are now 2-0, but they have not looked great in either win over teams that most top 25 teams would roll over. Last week, they onlt beat SJSU by 10, a team that USC buried 56-3 the week before. They stay here for now, but if they don't show more in the next couple of weeks, win or lose, they will probably drop from the rankings. I almost dropped them this week and maybe I should have in favor of Houston. Hindsight is 20/20.

24--Northwestern HOUSTON (NR)

I noted above that hindsight is 20/20. I'm noting it again here. The last I saw, Northwestern was winning their game over EMU in the fourth quarter by 14 points. I assumed the rout was on and the game was over, and I ranked NW at No. 24 when I submitted my ballot. I didn't see the final score until afterwards. Northwestern nearly lost to Eastern Michigan and had I known that, they would not have made the poll. So even though I ranked them on my TBDPITL ballot which can't be changed until week three, I'm hereby changing my No. 24 ranking from NW, to Houston. The Cougars dazzled the nation last week, pulling off the biggest upset to date over Oklahoma State. This week they host Texas Tech. Talk about a potential shootout. If Houston wins that game, they're easily heading for the my top 15, or higher.

25--MIAMI-FLA (25)

The Canes had a bye week after their huge win over the Seminoles last Monday night. Jacory Harris is a star in-the-making and the Hurricanes are loaded with tons of young talent and a good coach in Randy Shannon. I thought about dropping them since they had a bye, but with their brutal schedule (next three games: Georgia, Va Tech, Oklahoma), this will very likely be the last week for them as a ranked team in 2009.

Dropped out:

Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame

Newcomers:

Texas Tech, Michigan, Houston

Almost in:

West Virginia, Missouri, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Baylor, Arkansas

For Once, I Agree With Pat Forde: Pigs Must Be Flying and Hell Must Have Frozen Over

By Pat Forde—ESPN.com

There are worse places for a freshman quarterback to be than his own 5-yard line facing a second-and-19 with a five-point deficit, time wasting and the entire state of Ohio screaming in his ears.

Like San Quentin. Or the mouth of a shark.

Other than that, the situation in which Matt Barkley found himself at Ohio Stadium was about as bad as it gets.

It was in this most dire football circumstance that Barkley entered the USC huddle and … smiled.

"Matt came to us with a smile on his face and was just like, 'Let's get it done,'" Trojans center Kris O'Dowd said.

Really? He was smiling?

"Grinning," O'Dowd confirmed.

Did you think he was nuts?

"Maybe," O'Dowd said, grinning himself. "But I'm going to roll with it."

Oh, they're all willing to roll with this kid now. The Barkley bandwagon, picking up momentum for a month, is stampeding now.

Freshmen don't start at quarterback at USC. And freshmen don't come into a certifiable madhouse like the Horseshoe and beat the Buckeyes. And freshmen certainly don't beat the Buckeyes by leading long, dramatic, game-winning drives in the final minutes.

Until Barkley did all those things.

"Pretty cool, isn't it?" Trojans coach Pete Carroll said. "That was really good.

"The questions everyone was asking about Matt are totally legitimate. All we can tell you is that the guy is really special."

After producing precious little offensively all night, Barkley conjured the kind of crunch-time magic that separates special quarterbacks (such as John Elway and Joe Montana) from merely talented quarterbacks (such as Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor). Against an excellent defense, he delivered the most devastating drive the state of Ohio has seen since Elway crushed the Cleveland Browns in the 1986 AFC Championship Game. Barkley led USC to an 18-15 defeat of the Buckeyes that sucked the sound from a record crowd of 106,033.

But as tempting as the comparison is to Elway and The Drive, a better analogy might be what Montana did to the NFL team from the other end of this state, the Cincinnati Bengals, in Super Bowl XXIII in 1989.

Montana began the winning drive in that game at his team's 8-yard line. Before the first play, according to folklore, Montana looked into the stands and quipped to his teammates in the huddle, "Isn't that John Candy?"

This time, Barkley bopped into the huddle beaming.

"We all smiled," receiver Damian Williams said.

By the time this drive was finished, the Trojans were howling. Rejoicing. Embracing. Winning a potential national championship elimination game that had appeared lost for much of the night.

The official stats say Barkley led the Trojans for 86 yards in 14 plays, scoring the clinching touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:05 left. The truth is that after a sack and a false start, USC was 19 yards from a first down and 95 yards from a touchdown.

The Shoe shook with noise, as Buckeye Nation anticipated the validating victory that has escaped it since January 2003.

For USC, the situation wasn't hopeless, but you could see it from there. That's when Barkley's arm and tailback Joe McKnight's legs saved the night, one play at a time.

First came a McKnight draw for 11 yards. Then, on third-and-8 from the 16, Barkley found McKnight on an option route against a linebacker and hit him for 21 yards.

Credit assistant offensive coach Jeremy Bates, the Trojans' first-year playcaller, with dialing up just the right stuff at just the right time.

"You've got to believe we're going to find a way," Bates said. "And we did."

The spark of hope from that initial first down of the drive became a bonfire. Barkley then drilled tight end Anthony McCoy on a seam route for 26 yards down to the Ohio State 37. At that point, you could hear the entire stadium pucker and feel the Barkley legend building.

The next eight plays were either passes or quarterback sneaks by Barkley or runs by McKnight, the superstar recruit who has matured from a duck-and-dodge specialist into a more physical runner as a junior. Finally, on first-and-goal at the 2, Stafon Johnson took a handoff and danced outside the right end to score untouched. Then Barkley passed to McKnight for two points and an 18-15 lead.

"It's on his [Barkley's] shoulders, and he did it," linebacker Chris Galippo said. "He was so not like a freshman. [Mark] Sanchez, [Matt] Leinart, [Carson] Palmer -- I don't know whether they could have done that."

Barkley could. Barkley did. Then Barkley grinned and shrugged, less awed by his precocity than the rest of us.

"This is what it's supposed to be, and what I came here for," he said. "It is kind of surreal, but it's what I've always wanted."

For Ohio State, the victory it has craved for years over a big-boy opponent disappeared in the final minutes.

The Buckeyes can blame their coach, Jim Tressel, for his trademark play-not-to-lose conservatism -- they squandered supreme field position time and again. Tressel's most questionable move was bypassing a 53-yard field goal in favor of one of his favorite plays -- the pin-'em-back punt. Kicker Aaron Pettrey can kick 50-yarders -- if he's given a chance.

He wasn't Saturday, as Tressel waved in the punting unit from the USC 36. The Buckeyes downed the ball at the Trojans' 14 -- which only set the stage for the winning drive.

And Buckeyes fans also can shake their heads over Pryor, the splendid physical specimen who often looks ordinary.

In this battle of young quarterbacks, sophomore Pryor had the ball last. More than a minute remained on the clock when the Buckeyes took over at their own 36-yard line, but they made nothing happen. Pryor was pressured by USC All-American safety Taylor Mays into an intentional grounding penalty on first down, scrambled for 14 yards, then threw incomplete twice.

Just like that, the night was lost. And 15 games into Pryor's college career, he's still waiting to have the kind of moment Barkley enjoyed Saturday night.
