BREAKING NEWS: WR Duron Carter, DE Keith Wells Are Both Now FORMER Buckeyes

After a tumultuous first season in Columbus, Ohio State sophomore-to-be wide receiver Duron Carter has withdrawn from OSU, according to Bill Greene of Scout.com.

Carter has reportedly enrolled at Coffeyville (KS) Community College. He is expected to spend one year there to improve his grades and then he will be eligible to play Division-I football again.

After earning a starting spot in 2009 and catching 13 passes for 179 yards during the regular season, Carter was ruled academically ineligible for the Rose Bowl and missed spring practice for academic reasons.

At Coffeyville, Carter will attempt to improve his academic status in addition to playing football, and will seek to transfer to a Division-I school in June of 2011. He will then have three years of eligibility remaining.

It’s been a rough day for Jim Tressel and Ohio State football.

Sophomore defensive end Keith Wells has also decided to leave the program, according to a university release and Jeff Svoboda of BuckeyeSports.com.

Wells saw limited action in 2008 as a true freshman, and redshirted last season after an offseason injury. Wells would have been a backup defensive end in 2010, behind starters Cameron Heyward and Nathan Williams.

He took part in spring drills but would have been fighting for playing time with redshirt freshman Melvin Fellows and junior Soloman Thomas.

According to an article by Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch, Cris Carter says the plan is for his son Duron to get his academics in order so he may re-enroll at Ohio State next June.

Like Father Like Son: Duron Carter Adding to Terrelle Pryor's List of Weapons

Cris Carter was arguably one of the best receivers to put on a uniform for the Buckeyes. He was the first Ohio State wide out to become an All-American after his junior season.

It didn't take long for Carter to make an impact in Columbus, setting the Rose Bowl record with nine receptions for 172 yards as a freshman.

He left Ohio State after three seasons with a record 168 total receptions. In 2000, he was inducted into the Ohio State Hall of Fame.

Now his son Duron Carter looks to continue his fathers' legacy and become the next great receiver for the Buckeyes, and hopefully lead Ohio State to a National Championship.

He is an addition to some of the weapons Terrelle Pryor already has, the biggest man on the list being DeVeir Posey.

If Carter can do like his father and have an immediate impact, there is no question that this team will be loaded with talent once again.

The Buckeyes look like they will surpass the 2006 team that was just stacked with talent like Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzales, and Antonio Pittman.

The Buckeyes now have three backs that can really make this running game confusing to defend.

They also have a multi-threat quarterback in Terrelle Pryor who will have the ball in his hands on every snap.

Finally, they look like their receiving core will be really athletic and talented, with possibly more depth than the '06 season.

Carter will need to fight for snaps because he does have competition in Posey and Ray Small.

Carter is a tall receiver with great athleticism, and when he adds some bulk, he'll be one of the top receivers in the nation.

The Buckeyes can see he is dedicated to playing in Columbus because he lived in Florida and could have easily went to any school around there, but he chose Ohio State.

The one great thing the scouts have been saying about Carter is he has reliable hands. He reaches out to catch the ball and adjusts well to bad passes.

That will be a quality that Terrelle Pryor will need, because he is still developing as a passer.

He's great in yards after catch and can usually make the first defender miss and he breaks tackles in the open field. He's aggressive and is not afraid to go over the middle. He's a deep ball threat and, like his father, has great route-running ability.

He's fast, but doesn't have blazing speed. He makes up for it in the key areas that the Buckeyes will need from their wide receivers.

"One of the guys we are very impressed with is Duron Carter and his route-running ability," Tressel said.

Carter could play a key role in whether or not the Buckeyes make it to the National Championship game this season or next.
